Chickens Coming Home To Roost
Western civilization, especially in Europe, is beginning to wake up to the fact that significant Muslim minorities have arisen in their midst. No doubt, the mere presence of large numbers of Muslims, in the racist mindset of former colonizers, is probably causing flashbacks of fear of Al-Andalus, the Barbary states, and the Ottoman Empire.
Now their governments are scrambling to exert pressure on these immigrants to completely abandon their traditional cultures (read: Islam) and integrate more than an average European. They are being asked not only to become French, but to become more French then the French themselves. Unfortunately, some Muslims lack the ability to see the forthcoming (and already forming) disparate treatment of Muslims by Europeans. They will undoubtedly jump on the “lets secularize Islam” and “integrate” ourselves without engaging in a critical analysis of what “integration” entails. Calls for integration are increasingly coming simultaneously from governments or political actors that have openly castigated Islam as being either incompatible, irrelevant, or inferior to Western civilization. There’s nothing more likely to convince a person to join a host culture then being told him and his forefathers were inferior. [/sarcasm]
What I find humorous is that no one but Westerners can blame themselves for this current predicament. To be more specific, the cause of these tensions is not some sort of conniving program for infiltration by a Muslim hive mind, but Western civilization itself through global capitalism.
How did global capitalism cause the present tensions in Europe and the rest of the West?
Firstly, it lead to the rise of imperialism where European nations eventually went to obscene lengths to obtain global domination. An entire essay can be written on the relationship between capitalism, industrialization, and imperialism. Needless to say, colonizing a country and stealing their resources was an easy way to get raw materials which were then processed and manufactured and sold back to the colonized, creating capital which went back to the colonizing country. However, imperialism, the heightened global manifestation of colonialism, resulted in a power struggle between European countries that ultimately lead them to war with one another.
Secondly, it lead to the demise of imperialism because it was to costly to maintain order over native populations. When European countries went to war with one another, it made it very difficult for them to meet the costs of maintaining their overseas colonies. The nationalist liberation movements applied just enough little pressure in comparison to the whole scheme of control within the colonizer-colonized relationship.
Thirdly, the post-war economic collapse of Europe created a labor deficit that required them to import Muslims from their former colonies. they were treated in a disparate manner and discriminated against which lead to the formation of ghettoes. Some fascists go so far as to blame the immigrants for the formation of these ghettoes and not on complex social and economic conditions. As if anyone in their right mind would willfully want to isolate themselves from the prosperous elements of society with a lower standard of living. [/sarcasm] The racial divisions within these societies was based on economic lines as well.
Fourthly, the commodification of human relationships (the heart of capitalism) lead many Europeans to develop hyperindividualism and hedonism in their sexual relations. with a less emphasis on the family, their birthrates dropped radically, making them more reliant upon imported labor from the Muslim world now and in the future.
Thus, from the beginning to the end, the invisible hand of Capitalism has just given the West a royal big middle finger.
In my opinion, this is just cosmic justice at work. The chickens are coming home to roost.
