Even Capitalism is Controlled by Allah (swt)

“Praise be to Allah (SWT) the Cherisher and Sustainer of the Worlds.”
(Surat al Fatihah)

Starting with individuals like Francis Fukuyama, the argument that humanity has reached the end of its intellectual history with liberal democratic capitalism reigning suprme while all other major alternatives for social organization are obsolete has become quite popular these days. Liberal democratic theory adulates itself for giving the individual full guarantee of rights and the delusion of the ability to control the self’s destiny. The rise of democracy in the world has not created a new man in control of his destiny, but a new form of enslavement to one’s desires and mass society. In modern society everyone is special, just like everyone else. Mediocrity is the result of this new social theory, not liberation. Liberal capitalism, coupled with liberal democracy, has produced an effect that was most likely unforeseen by its original proponents. Such side effects, which we are currently witnessing today, now seem irresistible.

It seems that the more Man plans to avoid Allah (SWT) (swt), the more he is drawn to Him, the Irresistible.

Even this economic system, capitalism, which boasts supremacy in the world today, is not within the dominion of Man, but within the complete dominion of Allah (SWT) (swt). Communism, or a command control economy, was a complete failure at man’s attempt to take the reins of economic growth into his own hands. Capitalism focuses on letting the market work itself out through cycles of boom and bust and only calling for government intervention when it is necessary or favorable.

However, even the most powerful nations, like Egypt in the time of Yusuf (as) are subject to the complete and total subservience to the Will of Allah (SWT) (swt).

As you read the following excerpt from Imam Juwayni’s “Conclusive Proofs for the Principles of Beliefs”, think of the story of Yusuf (as) while he served as a vicegerent to the ruler of Egypt during its various economic cycles, especially its famines. Also, ponder over the concept of Rizq as you read this excerpt.

“The price of all goods accord with the dictates of God, the Exalted. They are established as the exchange value of things. The price depends on factors over which a human has no control, such as scarcity and abundance, the fluctuation of interest and need, the increase and lessening of demand. Factors in them to which human choice applies are likewise acts of God, the Exalted, since there is no Creator other than He.

The Mu’tazilites profess a doctrine that prices are set by human action. In what we have set out previously, in regard to the creation of deeds, there is already a convincing refutation of their notion.”

Yeah, I intentionally created a wierd title. It tends to capture attention.

The point of the post was to illustrate that although the kuffar boast about their power and wealth, in reality, this power and wealth isn’t something that has been attained through their own labor or volition but comes from Allah (SWT) (swt).

So when we see events unfolding in the world, we shouldn’t ask ‘how did the kuffar get so strong’ but rather ‘what are we doing to incur the wrath of Allah (SWT) (swt).’ We should also recall that true success is the success of the akhirah, not this life.
