I suppose it was only a matter of time before someone claimed to be the mahdi. In my previous survey on nominating candidates for the position of Khalifah, a good portion of people apathetically stated that the Khalifah could only be established by the Mahdi. As such, perhaps falsely declaring to be the Mahdi might be the only way to unite the Ummah.

Apparently, a Shi’i claimed to be a mahdi and began organizing an army comprised of both Sunnis and Shi’is which was designed to initiate an armed struggle, starting with eliminating the Shi’i clery.

All in all, I’m not surprised that someone claimed to be the Mahdi, but the fact that he was able to unite Sunnis and Shi’is so quickly in a place that has the most violent sectarianism in the Ummah.

He might not be THE Mahdi, but he might be a precursor to the real mahdi:

“A man will seek refuge in Mecca and will be killed, then after that, a long period of time will pass, then another man (the Mahdi) will seek refuge in Mecca but if you meet him do not fight him for if you do you will be part of the army that will be sunk and destroyed.”
