On Islam and Terrorism
So, I was killing time in between the Multiple Choice and the Essay portions of my Property exams when I came up with an idea for writing a paper
The topic of the paper will be a comprehensive scrutiny of the phenomenon of terrorism.
The basic premises of this paper will be the following:
I. Terrorism is a Vague Concept. This section points out the inconsistencies by Western governments in defining terrorism. The critique will focus on how certain groups, organizations, or governments are not considered to be terrorists while other groups are.
II. Jihad is Not Terrorism. Although Islam promotes Jihad, it restricts terrorism both substantively and procedurally. Substantively, terrorism is categorized as hirabah and is thus, not only prohibited according to the Shariah, but is punishable by death. Procedurally, Jihad must conform to a certain set of procedures which cannot be met by engaging in terrorism.
III. Muslims Condemn Terrorism. Muslim scholars, organizations, and governments have repeatedly condemned terrorism. Since Terrorists represent a fringe group within the Muslim community, I’m going to do a survey of all the major Muslim scholars, organizations, and governments who condemn terrorism to prove that Muslims have been continuously condemning terrorism in all of its forms.
IV. Terrorism is a Result of Western Policies. Terrorism is a result of Western policies both directly and indirectly. What I want to show here is that most terrorist organizations were in fact, trained by the West directly. Indirectly, I want to point out how every single act of terrorism that has occurred has been a direct or indirect result of Western foreign policy.
I’m going to need assistance on the third and fourth premises. In fact, the hardest part of my research is going to require me to study every single act of “Islamic” terrorism and scrutinize it.
